Keeping the North-East supplied with road salt

On average, 69,000-tonnes of road salt is imported to Aberdeen from the UK and mainland Europe.

Vessels containing mineral salt for the region’s highways and roads are once again arriving at the Harbour, ensuring that the region's stocks are maintained over the winter period.

On average, 69,000-tonnes of road salt is imported to Aberdeen from areas including Cleveland, North Yorkshire and Spain.  The road salt is then distributed to regional depots and around the city, for use on roads and pavements.

Matt North, Chief Operating Officer at Aberdeen Harbour Board, said: “The annual import of road salt is a key way Aberdeen Harbour supports the Road Authorities on a practical level, and the shipments arriving in early autumn ensures the Council & Regional Highway teams are prepared for the onset of winter conditions.

“My thanks go to our operations teams and local, experienced supply chain, who ensure the safe and efficient arrival and distribution of this winter necessity."
