ANOTHER AWARD FOR MARINE OPERATIONS CENTRE

Aberdeen Harbour's Marine Operations Centre has been commended in The Saltire Society's Civil Engineering Awards 2007, presented in association with The Institution of Civil Engineers.

The recognition is for the Project as a whole in one of the five categories of the annual awards which acknowledge excellence in civil engineering in Scotland. The Project category takes into account various aspects of design and construction, with particular attention paid to their integration.

The Awards are supported by the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Scotland), the Building and Civil Engineering Benefit Schemes the Association of Consulting Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

The certificate of Commendation was presented to the Harbour Board's Engineering Director, Ken Reilly, at an awards ceremony in Edinburgh. Also represented were the project's architects, SMC Parr; contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, and Arch Henderson, Consulting Engineer.

The state-of-the-art Marine Operations Centre at the North Pier has been operational since September 2006. Its role includes monitoring and directing around 25,000 vessel movements annually.

The Centre, which immediately became a landmark at the port's entrance, took top honours last year in the Aberdeen Civic Society's annual Awards and Commendations.

Ken Reilly said: "The project called for design and construction which not only provided a technologically-advanced, multi-functional facility improving the efficiency of port operations and quality of working environment, but also made a significant contribution to the image of the harbour and city.

"The objectives have been achieved, as is recognised in awards and many favourable comments, as well as the Centre's successful operation. Everyone involved in the project deserves credit."
