ANOTHER RECORD HALF-YEAR FOR ACTIVITY AT ABERDEEN HARBOUR
Another record six months for cargo and shipping at Aberdeen Harbour.
Aberdeen Harbour is continuing to attract record traffic, with port users generating further increases in the tonnages of cargo and shipping handled in the first half of 2008.
Imports and exports for January to June were up around 2% at 2.51 million tonnes compared with the same period last year, while vessels totalled 11.89 million gross tonnes, a rise of 4.9%, with the number of arrivals again at almost 4,000.
The previous half-year record for cargo and shipping was set in 2006.
Aberdeen Harbour Board Chief Executive, Colin Parker, said: "The sustained record performance again reflects busy times across various sectors, with the high level of activity in the offshore oil and gas industry and the diversity of cargo traffic making major contributions."
"It underlines our commitment to provide increased capacity and further improvements in the efficient operation of the port through significant investment in a series of projects."
A notable feature of the half-year period was the jump in exports of scrap metal, at 67,198 tonnes, up from 39,879 in the same six months in 2007.
Passenger figures held steady with almost 57,500 using the ferry service between Aberdeen, Shetland and Orkney.
