Aberdeen Harbour Board’s partnership with Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) has been short-listed in the Arts & Business Scotland Awards for 2008.
The Board support the education programme at APA’s HM Theatre with funding to help provide subsidised tickets, workshops and transport for children from schools in Aberdeen City and Shire.
"The short listing highlights the value of the work the Theatre is doing to encourage interest and involvement among the young," said the Harbour Board’s Chief Executive, Colin Parker. "More than 1,000 participated in the first year of the partnership, and we are delighted to be now supporting for a second year."
Around 80 children, aged four-six recently attend a workshop in St Machar Academy, with the main character, Sportacus, from the BBC's Lazytown series.
Lorna Christie, Development Manager with APA, said: "The support scheme was successfully piloted last year, with primary and secondary pupils from schools across the region attending performances, participating enthusiastically in workshops and benefiting from the experience."
The Harbour Board's sponsorship has been described as "innovative" by Barclay Price, Director of Arts & Business Scotland.
The partnership is included in the Young People Award category, along with the Bank of Scotland, Royal Mail Group Scotland, Scottish Widows, Shell Exploration & Production in Europe and Standard Life.
