NEW PHASE FOR PORT SAFETY LIAISON GROUP AT ABERDEEN HARBOUR

Aberdeen Harbour ’s Port Safety Liaison Group has entered a significant new phase, with port users now responsible for directing future actions.

Derek Johnstone, HSEQ Manager with SBS Logistics, has been appointed Chairman in succession to Jamie Christie , Aberdeen Harbour Board’s Assistant Engineering Director. Gillian Henderson, Logistics HSE Adviser with BP, is the new Vice-Chair.

The Group was established in 2004 in response to the industry’s Safer Ports Initiative which set national reduction targets for both fatal and HSE reportable accidents and it has played a key part in achieving these locally.

Jamie Christie, the Group’s inaugural Chairman, commented: “The plan at formation was for the Harbour Board to facilitate the Group’s growth and to drive it forward initially. With the momentum sustained, the point has now been reached where members are taking it to the next stage. The Board remain supportive and will continue to promote the Group’s important contribution to safety within the port community.”

Derek Johnstone said: “As port users, we share the Harbour Board’s emphasis on safe operations. The Group is now in the process of evaluating its strategy for the coming year and, in particular, is looking forward to the launch of the Safer Ports Initiative Part 2, and the challenges and targets that may hold.”
