Universal Africa Lines’ commitment to servicing the UK offshore oil and gas industry’s activities on the west coast of Africa has been highlighted with the renaming of the latest addition to its fleet.

The multi-purpose cargo vessel, UAL Aberdeen, arrived in Aberdeen following dry-docking in Las Palmas where the former Flintersky was renamed.

A spokesperson for Kestrel Liner Agencies Limited, UAL ’s UK General Agent, said: “The renaming shows great appreciation of all our customers in Aberdeen for their continued loyal support.”

With a twice-monthly service, UAL has been calling at Aberdeen since 2000 and servicing the offshore industry in West Africa for 25 years.

Nor-Cargo is the handling/terminal operating company at Aberdeen. General Manager, Ian Shewan, said: “The renaming of the vessel to highlight the Aberdeen connection reflects UAL ’s commitment to servicing the oil industry, and the success in building up traffic on this route with the growing role of the port as a marshalling point for the export of oilfield equipment and supplies.”

Aberdeen Harbour Board Chief Executive, Barclay Braithwaite, presented a plaque to the vessel’s Master, Captain Sijbe J Willemsen, to mark the first visit by UAL Aberdeen.

The 9,122 dwt UAL Aberdeen berthed at deep-water Atlantic Wharf to load around 2,000 tonnes of oilfield equipment for Lobito , Luanda and Soyo, in Angola.

She will be followed into Aberdeen in early August by the UAL Rodach to load cargo for Port Harcourt, Nigeria; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Port Gentil, Gabon and Pointe Noire, Congo.
