ABERDEEN HARBOUR RECORDS LARGEST VESSEL YET
The largest vessel yet to berth at Aberdeen Harbour arrived in port on Tuesday 16th March with a consignment of pulp for a North-east paper mill.
At 18,286 gross tonnes, the Finnfighter breaks by over 1,100 tonnes the record which was set by the Trade Green when she brought barites to the port.
The Finnfighter was on the last stage of a delivery run to European ports with pulp from the USA.
Aberdeen Cargo Handling Services were the local agents for the vessel. She was berthed at Telford Dock's Clipper Quay where around 6,800 tonnes of pulp for the Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, mill of International Paper (UK) was unloaded.
The provision of additional deep-water berths at Aberdeen Harbour over the last decade or so has enabled the port to handle larger vessels now operating - in sectors such as pulp transportation and the offshore oil and gas industry - and to accommodate a record annual tonnage of shipping.
The Finnfighter, which is 158.6 metres long, with a breadth of 25.6 metres, left Aberdeen around 11pm on the 17th March 2004.
