Accropode Production Facility Takes Shape

A new feature of the Gregness skyline, Dragados UK's accropode production facility building, is taking shape as its construction progresses. The building, which is 15 metres high and 120 metres long, will be home to the 'double loop track carousel', which will be used to manufacture some 9,000 accropodes, to be used in the project.

The accropodes, which vary in weight from 20 to 40 tonnes, will be used as outer armour for the north and south breakwaters, which are designed to shelter the new South Harbour. Due to the weight of the units, they exert a significant downward force when placed as the final layer of breakwater protection, and this ensures that the force of the waves cannot displace the other, inner, layers. The complex geometrical shape of the accropodes also allows each individual unit to be interlocked with another, forming a single, incredibly strong entity, able to withstand all weather conditions.

The north breakwater is scheduled to be completed by 2019, with construction of the South Breakwater to commence in 2018.
