CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

In October 2003, Aberdeen Harbour became the first port in Scotland to be certified to the ECOPORTS Port Environmental Review System (PERS) standard.

PERS has been developed by the ECOPORTS Foundation to incorporate the recommendations of the European Sea Ports Organisation's Environmental Review and Code of Practice.

Greater transparency and knowledge sharing is part of the best practice encouraged by the ECOPORTS foundation. In September 2003 the Board approved a new environmental policy statement that included a pledge to publish environmental information.

MONITORING

Over a period of five years, an environmental study has been carried out in conjunction with the University of Aberdeen. A key element of the ongoing project has been the close links developed with the University facilitating technology and knowledge transfer and providing valuable hands-on experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students alike.

The focus of the study is a series of twice-yearly sediment samples. Parameters measured include heavy metals, hydrocarbons and TBT.

Assessments of local biological diversity have included surveys of the species living on and in sediments and suitable intertidal areas.

The study also benefited from a recent air-quality study that included measurements of nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate levels. Continued research in this field is being carried out in conjunction with the City Council.
